A Baptist Fan Finish

Quiltmaker: Karen D. Lee
Quiltmaker named quilt:
Quilted by: Val @ Olde Green Cupboard
Pattern: Carrie Nelson ~ Scarlet Begonia

History of the Quiltmaking as I blogged it. Stack of luscious fabric, a test block, variations on the Design Wall until joyfully we finished [click here].

I was going for a reproduction look, chose a thin batting and went with the baptist fan. This quilt is lovely but imagine it with a more swirly, flowery, pretty quilting. Are you seeing it? Changes the look and feel of the quilt, doesn’t it?

I’m pleased the baptist fan was selected. It gives this piece an overall utility quilt look. I imagine a wife and her daughters making this quilt for their father or brother’s to use during the Civil War. 620,000 casualties and the fabric reflects its utility, the practical use at the time.

This quilt was made with help. Someone purchased the fabric for me, someone else shopped with me and a couple of others supported me physically with the arranging of blocks prior to sewing. When I look at this quilt it will remind me always of all the really neat, beautiful people that contribute to keeping me quilting. I dig that!

A Closer Look at LeeHaven

Forward Motion.

I needed some mindless sewing so I did some lil patches in between making star blocks for “Sallie’s Quilt.” I added another 30 of those lil patches (I think), which takes me close to 100. Not in the ball park. I bagged ‘em up and moved on. We’ll be working on this for a long while.

A Closer Look

If you haven’t had a chance to look at the fabrics included in these little blocks, my little “wash tub” blocks, definitely do! If you like Civil War fabrics this should give you a sense of how my visionary-self works with the different paints and, if you haven’t really studied these, it’ll give you an idea of what all is included in a Civil War Repro line.

Idea’s in a Kit

In case you didn’t know, the CWT is a Kit. So, while this of course you’ve seen, I wanted to focus solely on the setting blocks for the Civil War Tribute. This is a valuable share for me. I’ve learned so much working on this quilt it’s overwhelming so it’ll just have to come out as it fits.

I’ve never considered this as an option for a setting block and I like it. My mind is opening and I’m holding fast to this concept. I do not have plans for this in the least but its great to see my mind crack open and contemplate new things!

It’s a total trip actually.

I’m sewing rows together today.

The Nurtured Self

  1. Quilted before household chores yesterday. That was really hard. But I enjoyed my quilting time – absolutely. By the time I had cleaning chores last night I was whipped. Dragging!
  2. Training Duke on his “Down/Stay.” This isn’t so much a difficult task as it is a lot of dern work. He has two spots where he’s working on this exercise right now. Both are within easy Duke readjustment [for me].
  3. Two nights ago I was having difficulty falling asleep (busy quilty mind). So I challeneged myself to go right into prayer, you know, your nightly prayers – your before sleep thoughts. Well do you know the first thing that came to my mind was a gratefulness prayer. Thankfulness and gratefulness for what I am able to do. It could have been The Lords Prayer or my own personal Mantra/Prayer I created for the One and the All. But it wasn’t. It was gratefulness. That was a cool moment.
