My work from Klosjes Saturday. Bless their little hearts, they don’t look anything like the neat spools I’ve seen coming from around the world (see my sidebar pic). You have to know I started cracking up last night and said “Gosh, sad. These look like Great Recession Spools!” Like that’s all the thread you get! Things are so bad there’s thread rationing. Then I decided they were cute because they made me laugh with that whole Great Recession thing. So I’m working with these.
If you want to jump off and see other spools you can start off at Janet’s link here or from Valentina’s link here. You’ll be able to see what’s needed in order to make the nice authentic spools. Pattern drafting. Math. Oh Kay! Brain fires! Anyway, I finally think I figured out how I can do that so I might change my Great Recession spools but since they cracked me up and all… it’s going to be difficult for me now. They might just be authentically *karendianne.
If you’re interested in make this Center Thread piece I wrote that down for you below.
The measurements for this is as given on Janet’s tutorial except for Center strip. Change as follows to make thread:
- Cut’s are 1.5″ as with all other cuts. Cut 2 – 1.5″ squares from the 3.5 center strip if you were following Janet’s directions (or just cut 2 – 1.5″ squares color of spool)
- Center [ thread] piece – cut that 1.5 x 1.25 and I sew scant .25″ on that.
- When done with Center [ thread] piece – ensure 3.5″
My body is tuckered out from all the spooling around plus chores and all. (Oh but the sun was out so I did sneaky some time out there as much as I could get!) Perhaps some hand piecing today along with the arrival of The Tudors. The first DVD arrived Friday. Looking forward to that treat. And oh my goodness I do need to clean up my cutting table from Klosjes Saturday! 1.5″ strips everywhere. A party was had.
Thanks Janet for the invitation and spreading the word from Holland. It’s a really magical connection. I love being a part of this and think what a wonderful memory we’re creating here.

I may have to jump in on the spool now that my GFG is finished. (Binding and all!) I love the spools. The first quilting book I ever read featured a spool quilt and I have never forgotten it. Love your variety!

I'm a bit slow at catching up but what a treat to find your recession spools looking delightful,so glad you've joined in. This pattern is spools and is the Barbara Brackman listed one so there's no wrong there.
Great little spools, now don't use all that thread at once, maybe these are the right size to make a doll quilt.
Gosh, I was only gone for 3 days and look how busy you've been?! I love the spools and love the Great Recession name too! What a hoot!
Once upon a time ago, I was going to do a spools quilt – I had a nice collection of stripes & everything….

There's no law that says your spools have to be the same as everyone else's, so you stick with the Recession spools they're great.
Your spools are fun! Keep going! I too have joined the Klosjes club, thanks to Nadine and Valentina for spreading the word.
Oh, Karen, you are too hard on yourself. The spools look wonderful. Keep making them.
