What runs through your head?
~or is it~
“I write therefore I am a Writer.”
My answer? I write therefore I’m a Writer. I’ve had the opportunity to notice quite a few good Writers around the Blogs. With that in mind I wanted to share my latest find. …because I think everyone here is a Writer.
You see, I’m from the Natalie Goldberg school of thought. I’m in camp with Julia Cameron. Christina Baldwin is a member of my inner writer’s circle. I find nuggets in Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird whenever I come across it. I’ve learned that Blogger’s (and so many others) are writers. So of course I wanted to share “The Daily Writer” as soon as I flipped through it.
I will say this – it’s not a simple book on the Craft of writing. It’s not solid, direct, tough and clear like Stephen King’s “On Writing.” It’s more like a creative writing class from a fun yet tough teacher filled with REAL creative challenges. That’s why I’m sharing! It’s worth a spot on your shelves and some time in your life. (…if you’re into it of course.)
Because Susan taught me to keep my table cleaned up after each project I’m working on I was able to shift from the Stars right into binding for Lady Jane. I’m doing a bias binding here [first time] and I kinda like the fun of the stripe vs. the dots. It’s just my little scrappy quilt and I love it. And I’m thanking Susan again for this really good advice. Simple things sometimes are important.

Kanga is in that bag and Kingston is chompin’ down. I guess maybe you had to be there but this totally cracked me up! I mean, really, Kingston. She’s in there. What are you thinking? Sheesh.

I guess we are all writer/bloggers then. Good to know. I hadn't thought much about that.
I am definitely not a great writer, but I write anyway! My DH is a superb writer, though. I enjoy your posts each time you post.
So now you have “Kanga Bag-O-Cute”!
Funny cats!
To my way of thinking, anyone who puts pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard!), whatever the reason, is a writer.
I've never done a bias binding like that, but I always love the look of diagonal stripes.
As for Kanga and Kingston, they are just so funny.
That looks like an interesting book and I so love your scrappy quilt.
lol Kingston is giving all new meaning to “brown bagging it!” Silly furry kids. Love seeing them at play…thanks for snapping them in action.
I LOVE your stripes and dots!!! Totally a sweet union of patterns!
United in hugs….
I love stripes, plaids or other geometrics for bindings. They just add a zing to a quilt, I think. Loved the photo of the bagged cat, very funny.
I am a writer too! And not only because I spell for a living (medical transcriptionist x 20 yrs)!
Oh, I learned a lot from this post…I need to make it a habit to clean my cutting table after working…and thanks for the book info!
I definitely don't consider myself a writer … I'd rather read something.
I DO need to be better about cleaning up my sewing/cutting tables after each quilt — my room is a disaster and if I was smart I'd not allow myself to start anything else before cleaning up some.
I write therefore I am. I quilt therefore I am. What am I? A writing quilter? A quilting writer? Oh, this is too philosophical for me. Don't get me confused. I write because I have to and I quilt for the pure joy of it! Love your quilt. Is there enough fibre in Kingston's diet? Just wondering.
Oh dear! Another book to get, hurrah!
I also love your scrappy quilt.
The book sounds great. I'll have to give it a looksie.
I'll have to try that book out. I write all the time but haven't published (nor submitted…) It is a dream though…
What a beautiful quilt, and the striped binding is fabulous!
one of my cats is a total bag addict too! he is a bit despondent that I pretty much only use my fabric grocery bags as they don't seem to be as interesting as the rustly paper ones.
poor guy huh? so, when are you going to come kayaking with me?
I so admire anyone that cleans up after one project before starting another. To me, that is “angelic”!
Thanks for the info on the books. I admit that the only one I have heard of (and read) was Stephen King's.
I love using stripes and plaids for bias binding because it gives such a great effect. I think I have only made bias binding instead of straight.
Very cute photo of the kitties. I think Kingston wants to keep Kanga in the bag! This is how cat battles start in my house. Then it turns into cat derby or Greco-Roman cat wrestling.
Now that is some heavy company you keep, Karen! I'm impressed! (And wouldn't the art on the cover of the daily writer make incredible fabric? – or was that Julia Cameron and art running through my head?) What runs through my head?….wishing I could be in the league of these writers (you're included)…
Love your binding – how brave you are to go for bias – well done!
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing the book – as I read your list, I have each one of the titles mentioned on the shelf…
Love the bias binding … and those kitties are TOO TOO funny (MIL keeps telling us we need a second cat for Angel).
Bookstore run at lunchtime!!!
You've got me fascinated by that book! It sounds like a must-have.
I hope Kingston likes the taste of paper bag! Too funny!
I'm proud of you for cleaning up your table after each project – I do it sometimes and always feel ready to tackle the next project when I do.
Love the binding – love the quilt!
Now that looks like a very snuggly 4-patch!
Polka dots and stripes are a wonderful combination and having seen that quilt up close and personal I think fantastic choice! I'm not a writer…you see my post…simply and quick!
Ooooo you gave me a quick little kitty fix today to start my day. I tell ya….a bag or box…don't be spending money!
After college, when my husband was still trying to “find” himself, he told me he wanted to be a writer. “Odd,” I thought. “I've never really seen him write.” (He is now a computer programmer.)
Writers write ~ end of story. They fill journals with longhand, scribble notes on scraps of paper, write letters to friends, compose inspiring blog posts, jot down clever turns of phrase. Very few are ever published (or even want to be).
I'm always on the lookout for books on writing. Sorry, Julia Cameron doesn't work for me. Maybe I'll give this one a try.
I love everything about your Lady Jane quilt.
Perfect choice for the quilt binding. Love it. I adore the cat pictures, including the one on your side bar. One of my kitties has mastered the art of getting in and out of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. They are too smart sometimes. Hugs
First off, thanks for the recommendations on the books. I could definitely use some help, or nudging in the creative side. I used to LOVE to just sit down and right a story — many, many moons ago.
The striped binding is absolutely PERFECT for that quilt! GREAT choice my friend.
Now do tell, did Kanga reach out and get Kingston or not?!? Did it turn into The Great Kitty Chase?
Love the quilt! It's so nice, it's fun to see the polka dots and the stripes, love your fabric choices.
Wish I was a “clean up the table” at the end of a project girl, but alas, I'm not.
Your cats make me chuckle! My cat, Tiger Lily, just adores playing with pipe cleaners! They keep her occupied for long periods of time. (You know, those things ARE alive!!)
Hugs
I LOVE that quilt, Karen … the colors are wonderful. How are you coming along? I do hope things are improving. TTFN ~Marydon
Got to check out that book!
Your quilt is just lovely! Excellent fabric choice too.
Love and adore the kitty pics. They give me a big smile.
Stripes make such fabulous bias binding!!! Perfect touch for a super quilt!
I love the shot of the kitties and the bag. How long did that go on? Was there a kitty battle through the paper bag?
Love the quilt, the whole quilt-binding and all. Beautiful. I am sure not a writer. Hey but I am not a quilter either. I think I am just a wanna be!! Hope you are doing well.
Loving that stripey binding. Kingston is a bit like our kitty – only she loves to bite cardboard boxes, not so much the bags …
*hugs*
