Repetitive Error

Good Monday to you and thanks for visiting LeeHaven located in one of the Hot Southern States. Those of us quilters living in this particular locale, well we’re in the business of Heat Acquisition although my understanding is that we’re not alone. Pretty much everyone’s in on Heat Acquisition. Wish we could turn this into a commodity?

Above I’m making a little something out of these reds and browns. A Dresden Plate. The vote was for 30′s and brights or polka dots (which I love) but I’m choosing favorites from my stash.

I blew it with the Antique patches. This error sucked the life right out of me. I thought I needed 40 setting blocks and 40 nine patches for an on-point setting. Well you know that isn’t correct and never would be. I wasn’t thinking, focused on the fabrics as I was, so I got this weird “80 blocks” number in my head. How did that get planted in there?
~~~
I thought I was so close to blocks done. I’m so not done. Very disheartened. Bummed, seriously bummed. Tripped up without a pattern or paper and planning yet again. Blast! I’m keeping on though with a little sidetracking…
Oh I love these scrappy geese. That’s what I decided to do after I was foiled by my error! :) They’re cute and I think I’ll make a few more. That is, until Susan comes to teach me how to make a Dresden Plate.
~~~
In closing allow me to admit I’ve made this mistake one too many times. No planning I mean. Especially without a pattern. Funny but I’m a serious planner in other areas of my life. Apparently with Quilting I’ve been blowing that off. This has to stop.
~~~
Flying by the Seat of my Pants? No more! Bums me out. And how many times has this happened? Well, at least I’ve caught on (slowly) and I wont be fighting momentary quilt depression on this issue anyway. …*karendianne.
  1. Working backwards here, Karen – and flying by the seat of my own pants!! Remember – great things come from no planning – put those blocks away for a while and they will suddenly and happily tell you what to do in time…
    Cheers!
  2. Oh my goodness me! I can read and re-read a pattern, and still do it totally back-assward!! When I'm flying by the seat of my quilty pants, I have learned to write down what it is I want to do, how many blocks I need, etc. One of the things I love about you is your total honesty about your quilting life. You are my hero! If we don't make mistakes, how are we going to learn and grow as quilters? Right? RIGHT!! I just wish I didn't have so dang much to learn!
    Love those reds – bring on the dresden plates!
  3. It isn't and error it is a design opportunity! I know what you mean though…hence the very large box of orphan blocks in my closet!
    Take care with the heat…California was wonderfully cool but very busy. Today is a day of rest!
  4. LOVE those reds! You know there is this Electric Quilt program that would really ease your stress on the designing level. Give it a try. You can do it all from your seat in front of the computer. Hee hee! I am on my way home girlfriend!
  5. I LOVE the reds and browns. Can't wait to see the quilt you make with them.
    As for the “creative opportunity” you have made for yourself, why not make a different sized quilt, or different layout with what you've got?
    Anyway, don't go thinking you're unique in doing that, I bet we almost all do it and some of us (ie, me) do it almost every time!
  6. Hey, join me, don't be shy, I make mistakes by the hatful WITH A PATTERN!
    I have to say, I love the browns and reds more than the antiques…they will make stunning Dresden plates.
  7. Oh, Karen, I too have been guilty of doing that, sewing and singing right through…and not having enough fabric, or making the whole quilt in the wrong size blocks, etc. Creativity takes overs…it's OK!! Something better will come out of it one day. Cheers!! I love those reds, yummy! I in my fits of crazy, have LOST my Dresden blocks, all ready to be appliqued to the background. sigh….Someday I will find them!
  8. Ahhh a quilting detour – that's what I like to call it – just detour around and come out good on the other side.
    I love those reds and browns – that will be one striking dresden plate quilt. I think that pattern is great in any color combo. I got some 70's dresden plate blocks at a thrift store – 17 of them for 2.99 – now that's a deal – gotta get to work on setting them together one of these days.
  9. Howdy!
    It's only 62 degrees right now at 4:30 pm… on the Summer Solstice!
    Let me tell you…
    Ain't no sunshine been beating on us for a while!
    I think we are actually in Alaska…
    Good luck with all that heat!
  10. I think I brought the heat back with me … it's been in the 90's today here in Minneapolis.
    It's not unusual for me to make some kind of error when I'm working on a new design …stupid me for some reason thought the blocks blocks for my Stars and Pinwheels quilt were going to be 12 inches…it's simple math …4×4 =16. The quilt will be much larger than I expected but I'm still loving it.
    Dresden Plate is on my to do list for one of these days ….maybe when they come out with a GO die to cut it all out!
  11. It's not a mistake you are just going down another path…..love the pink and B & W……one of my favourite combinations at the moement.
  12. I've lost count of my “errors” ~ now I see them as design opportunities which helps prevent the quilt depression you so perfectly described!
    LOVE those reds!
  13. We in the Northeast are in the business of rain aquisition. Seriously-it has rained 18 out of 23 days this month and the 5 that it didn't rain it was cloudy. But it's good weather for getting in the sewing room which I have been doing. Too bad we couldn't just share our respective acquisitions.
  14. Don't think of it as an error! Think of it as a creative opportunity. The soft blocks are beautiful — they look so lovely!
    The reds — wow! Those are gorgeous and look at those stripes! That will be a great Dresden!!
  15. Ah…this is all just more evidence that you're very creative and perhaps a little rebelious. All in a good way! Totally. How boring would the world be if we all wrote everything down…penciled it to the nearest little decimal point…and planned and followed rules as directed? Bor. Ing.
    Free Bird hugs. ;-)
  16. Karen, you sound so much like me and my “wacky” friends. Don't be depressed for too long.
    Take care and have a cool week!
  17. Ha! Welcome to the world of QADD – Quilt Attention Deficit Disorder. Gosh, I thought you were describing me in this post! Just let me know if you want/need any polka dots. I, um, er, have an embarrassing amount of them in my stash.
  18. Aww, Karen…it's ok. I've been guilty of this more than once, too. I kick myself for it too.
    I've been working on a new project…my stitch and split raw edge applique. I have them all cut out and ready to go on vacation with me later this week.
    Think I'll try to get a pic of them now they are cut out and post later today.
    Be kind to yourself and let your error go…it's not worth beating yourself up.
    Hugs and squeezies…
